lara st. john

Canadian-born violinist Lara St. John is a classical maverick without peer. Her brilliant musicianship and dynamic personality have made her an authentic classical superstar; she has been described by the New York Times as a “high-powered soloist” and the Los Angeles Times has called her work “wild, idiosyncratic and gripping.”

St. John began playing the violin at two years old; she made her concert debut at four and her European debut at age 10. She performs on a 1779 Guadagnini violin on loan from an anonymous donor. This instrument, valued at over $1 million, is the finest surviving violin by this famous maker, who was a contemporary of Stradivarius.

St. John's third recording, Bach: The Concerto Album, was released on iTunes in June of 2005 and immediately rose to number one in the Classical category. Another album, Bach: The Six Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo, was iTunes' best-selling double album of 2007.

This April, St. John returns to the fold with Vivaldi: The Four Seasons/Piazzolla: The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Her seventh recording, this album is a classic pairing of Antonio Vivaldi's Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons) with Astor Piazzolla's Argentinian translation of the same, Las Cuatro Estacionces Portenas (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires), as realized by Leonid Desyatnikov. What St. John brings to these much-loved and recorded concertos is warmth.
